The Casino Royale DB5 Poker Game – Explained
So just how did Bond win an Aston Martin DB5 by beating Alex Dimitrios in Texas Hold ‘Em poker in Casino Royale?
Check out the complete scene above, but let’s break it down below:
We enter the game with an overhead view of the flop (first three cards) revealed: 9 of diamonds, 3 of hearts and ace of clubs.
And the turn (fourth card) is revealed: 7 of hearts
Here, Dimitrios bets $5,000 which Bond quickly calls. Next, the river card is revealed: king of clubs
It’s Bond’s turn now, and he checks to Dimitrios, who goes all-in. But then Dimitrious insists to add another $20,000 to the pot and whips out his checkbook. As the game is table stakes (only that which is currently on the table can be bet), the dealer doesn’t allow the move. Dimitrios instead picks up his car keys from the table and throws them in the pot. Table stakes, right?
The dealer isn’t happy with the show, but Bond insists to allow it since he has been taking Dimitrios’ money the whole game and wants to give him a chance to win it back. The dealer shrugs and allows it, so Bond calls, all-in.
Dimitrios reveals his hand, a pair of kings, making trip kings with the river card and is arrogant about his chances:
Unfortunately for Dimitrios, Bond has a better hand. He reveals his pocket aces, which, added to the ace on the table, makes trip aces and wins Bond the entire pot, including the Aston Martin DB5 keys and hence the car.
Dimitrios is dumbfounded…check out the look on his face:
Bond wins the Aston Martin and asks for the valet ticket to seal the deal.
To make matters worse for Dimitrios, Bond eventually steals his girl Solange a short time later. What luck, 007!
