There’s just one thing I need
I mean…I don’t want to hype up the end of Spectre (2015) too much, but is there *really* a better end to a James Bond movie?
I just love everything about it – starting with a quiet, unassuming, empty downtown London – the shot of the flying, steadfast Union Jack after the madness of the toppling of Blofeld. Bond can take a deep breath.
What will he do next? Where will he go?
We are quickly transported back to Q Branch – an awesome Q (Ben Whishaw) starts his day with a cup of coffee, ready to take on the day’s tasks. Unannounced, a content James Bond asks his colleague and friend for one more “thing.” I knew it in the theater and I still love it to this day – he needed a car to leave for good.
And to no one’s surprise, it was another showcase of the Aston Martin DB5. This time, would it be a force to shoe-in the nostalgic car? Is its presence relevant? Without question, in this instance, the DB5 is perfect!
The turn of the ignition, the driving gloves (!), the gentle touch and move of the stick shift (don’t pop the top and touch the red ejector seat button, Bond!)…just wow! It ends with the prominent classic Bond theme in one of those scenes from a Bond movie that gives you chills. Even a casual or new James Bond fan would want to stay through at least the first part of the end credits because of the awesome theme…what other movie can say the same???
And this by far, is Madeleine Swann’s (Lea Seydoux) best on-screen presence of any movie – with her devious, satisfied, excited, endearing look to a grinning, yet out-of-focus James Bond in the foreground. Bond rides off into the sunset, in style (of course), with his girl…what more do you want from an ending?!
It also easily DESTROYS (caps on purpose) the atrocious ending of its successor, No Time To Die (2021) and I use the ending ammo for my argument as to why I consider Spectre a better Bond movie than Skyfall (2012) as well.
Just awesome!
